Program Response to SACS Standard 3.4.12 [The institution’s use of technology
enhances student learning and is appropriate for meeting the objectives of
its programs. Students have access to
and training in the use of technology.] In responding to
this standard, technology should be considered in the broadest reasonable
context, and not just with respect to the use of computers. IMPORTANT NOTE: This technology
standard compliance only pertains to the Business Administration Department
use of technology for the enhancement of student learning. Prepared by Max North, November 13, 2007 COMPLIANCE
RATING: Compliance (for
Business Administration) STATEMENT
OF COMPLIANCE The Business Administration Department’s use of technology
enhances faculty teaching and student learning at undergraduate and graduate
levels, is appropriate for meeting the objectives of its programs, and
ensures that students have sufficient access to and extensive training in the
use of technology. Therefore,
the BA Department is in compliance with this standard as the following
summary and supporting evidence will confirm. NARRATIVE The Business Administration Department uses technology in a
variety of ways to support faculty and students for all on- and off-campus
programs. In general, the university and BA department are fully committed to
integrating technology in all aspects of students’ learning endeavors.
State-of-the-art educational technologies are widely and efficiently
available for both on-campus and online (distance learning) students, which
ultimately prepare them for either joining workforce or pursuing advanced
degrees. 1.
Provide a master summary of
the most significant technology requirements for each major, including the
course(s) that address each requirement and the rationale for inclusion of that
technology, the method by which faculty and students become proficient in the
use of the technology, and a description of the facilities that support them. 1.1 Most
Significant Technology Requirements for Each Major A computer applications course (MGNT 2201) is required
from each student for the bachelor
of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), and Bachelor of Applied Sciences
(B.A.S.) in Business Administration.
Students are also required to learn how to use Web-based technology
for teaching and conducting research in various courses. 1.2 Courses
Addressing Technology Requirements Here is the list of the courses that help students to
learn the technology they need to assist and enhance their learning:
1.3 Faculty
and Students Training Methods There are several methods incorporated to
train faculty and students in educational technology. These methods include
but not limited to the following: (i)
Professional
Workshops for faculty and students either offered by the BA or IT
departments; (ii)
Courses
taken by students such as MGNT 2201 – Computer Applications, which covers word processing, spreadsheets, and
database business applications using the personal computer; and (iii)
Self-learned content. As mentioned earlier, the IT department offers
training workshops on educational technology for students, faculty and staffs
on a regular basis. Please see the
following website for detailed information: Training for Faculty and Students (by

1. 4 Access and Support Access to
technology across the SPSU’s community is comprehensive and pervasive, with
technology integrated at all levels of student experience, from courses to
services and other activities relating to learning. SPSU uses WebCT/Vista and supporting
technologies (such as course management systems, online testing software) for
delivering educational instructions in-class,
hybrid and fully online courses under the supervision of the Director
of Instructional Technology Services. These technologies are regularly
upgraded and designated as mission-critical academic systems with the highest
level of security and monitoring. These systems
significantly enhance student learning by expanding and augmenting
traditional courses. In addition, they provide the infrastructure for hybrid
courses and fully online, web-based courses used in distance learning
education endeavors. 1.5 Description of the Supporting Facilities The Information Technology (IT) Division provides computing and
communications infrastructure, services, support, and innovation for SPSU's
instructional and administrative programs. IT works closely with many other
units on campus to provide a wide range of services and training for students,
faculty, staff, alumni, and others.
Please see appendix A for a list of facilities and services provided
by the IT division. 2.
Provide a summary of program
offerings that make use of instructional technology in the classroom
(describe example(s)). A majority of Business Administration courses use instructional
technologies in varieties of ways. The following shows a selected list of
courses using instructional technologies:

The program does or does not
have a specific course in computing or computer applications as a requirement
(if yes, give representative course(s)). The Business Administration Program has MGNT 2201 –
Computer Applications, which is required from all the students who are
pursuing a bachelor’s degree. 5.
The program does or does not
have required laboratory or studio course(s) using instrumentation or software
(if yes, give representative course(s)). Extensive laboratory assignments are required for
mastering various software (e.g., Spread Sheet and Database) to solve
business problems or to assist managers in the decision making process. MGNT 2201 Computer Applications MGNT 3205 Management Information Systems MGNT 3500 Database Applications MGNT 4100 Business Systems Analysis and Design MGNT 4140 Management of Networks

The program does or does not
require capstone course(s) integrating technology into major project (if yes,
give course(s)). Most of our capstone courses utilize technology to solve various
management challenges and opportunities. 7.
The program does or does not
use open laboratories with program-specific software (if yes, give location
and usage statistics). Extensive laboratory assignments are required for
mastering various software (e.g., Spread Sheet and Database) to solve
business problems or to assist managers in the decision making process. The laboratory assignments are completed
either in J-215 (on campus) or students’ computers. Since majority of the software are readily
available on students’ computers, usage statistics are difficult to collect
in this situation. However the effects
of their trainings are reflected on their performance. MGNT 2201 Computer Applications MGNT 3205 Management Information Systems MGNT 3500 Database Applications MGNT 4100 Business Systems Analysis and Design MGNT 4140 Management of Networks

offer courses with online supplements (if yes, describe example(s)). The Business Administration department offers
several courses online, and many other courses use online supplements. ACCT 2101 Accounting I ACCT 2102 Accounting II MGNT 2201 Computer Applications MGNT

plan for students’ learning in the use of technology and how the results are
used for program improvement (also give an example). Business Administration department uses continuous informal and
formal surveys to assess and evaluate the students’ learning in the use of
technology. For practical reasons,
specifically the Management Information Systems (MIS) course (MGNT 2201) is
used to train and assess students’ skill in technology needed to successfully
complete their program. In addition,
formal Student Services survey is disseminated to students who either take
online or hybrid courses each semester.
10.1 MIS Technology Skills Assessment Outcome Expectations for Technology Skills After completing the required MIS course (MGNT
2201), students will be able to:
Types of Coverage and
Assessment Utilized: LHA - Laboratory Homework

Outcome is met based on success criterion?
(Yes or No) Success criterion is calculated on the basis
of averaging items AFMTE and AFE.
Outcome Conclusions:
10.2 Student Service Survey Assessment
Instrument SPSU Distance Learning Program collects data via survey from all
the students who either take fully online or hybrid courses each semester.
Table below is a sample of Student Services Survey for the Summer 2007.
Questions numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 directly surveys online and hybrid students
rating on use of instructional technology. The average rating is 3.48
(somehow satisfied) out of possible 5 (very satisfied).
